... there was a kindly lady who loved to spend time in the deep quiet of her woods, walking the footpaths, tending the trails, and watching forest critters large and small as they lived their woodland lives. Though the Lady of the Woods enjoyed her solitude, she did welcome company from time to time to share in the peacefulness of the forest. She especially loved the company of children, finding joy in their playful ways as only those who remain children at heart can. The Lady of the Woods’ own children had long since grown and she came to miss the chimes of child-laughter among the trees.
The Fairy Godmother was ever vigilant for the whisper of wishes and heard even this wish, unspoken upon the heart of the Lady of the Woods. The Fairy Godmother also loved children and decided to grant an enchantment to the Lady of the Woods. The Lady of the Woods would hold a festival and the Fairy Godmother would cast her magic; the Enchanted Forest would awaken, bringing spectacle and delight from the land of fairies. All would be welcomed to the Enchanted Forest to take part in the festivities, but the Fairy Godmother would listen carefully for the wishes of children who especially love fairy tale and adventure stories.
The Fairy Godmother’s sister, the Evil Queen, overheard this plot and was dismayed. The Evil Queen did not like children or their chiming laughter, but she did like to upset her sister’s plans at every opportunity. The Evil Queen sought to thwart the magic of her sister and cast her own magic just as the Fairy Godmother laid her enchantment upon the woods. The magic, often unpredictable even in the best of circumstances, went awry. Though the Evil Queen was not able to stop the enchantment, the enchantment was changed.
